Acupuncture and Depression:
A new study confirms that acupuncture increases the antidepressant therapy. The researchers found that acupuncture combined with paroxetine (Paxil, Sereupin, Aropax) is more effective than paroxetine alone. The researchers found that acupuncture accelerates clinical responses to serotonin selective reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), a class of drugs used for the treatment of major depressive disorder. Furthermore, the researchers concluded that acupuncture prevents worsening depression.
Electroacupuncture
The researchers divided 160 patients randomized with major depressive disorder (MDD) in three groups. The first group received only paroxetine. The second group received paroxetine with manual acupuncture and the third group received paroxetine with electroacupuncture. The groups that received acupuncture and electroacupuncture improved with paroxetine showed significantly higher than the group of drugs only. There was no increase in adverse events due to acupuncture or electroacupuncture. One week four monitoring showed that electroacupuncture demonstrated significantly greater improvements in recovery from depression than the other groups.
Another recent study confirms these findings. The researchers concluded that acupuncture and electroacupuncture improved "the quality of life in depressed patients on paroxetine treatment." Again, the electro therapy showed greater clinical improvements over manual acupuncture group. Acupuncture and electroacupuncture were applied to DU16, DU14, SP6 and P6 for patients taking paroxetine. Acupuncture treatments were administered three times per week for a total of six weeks. Acupuncture needle retention time was thirty minutes each office visit. The researchers concluded that electroacupuncture combined with paroxetine was more effective for the treatment of depression with acupuncture manual paroxetine or paroxetine alone.
There was a flurry of new discoveries demonstrate the effectiveness of acupuncture for the treatment of depression. A recent study concluded that MRI laser acupuncture stimulates brain areas needed for the treatment of depression. Laser light stimulation was applied to acupuncture points LR14, LR8, REN14 and HT7. The MRI scanner recorded the activation of DMN (default mode network) by laser acupuncture. The DMN is activated in healthy subjects, when the mind is at rest, or when the brain is not performing procedures oriented tasks. Researchers have shown that the laser has a modulatory in response acupuncture DMN suggesting an antidepressant effect in neurophysiological functions of the brain.
These new studies point to the same results as demonstrated by research from the University of Arizona in Tucson. Here, the researchers found that "acupuncture may provide symptomatic relief in significant depression at rates comparable to psychotherapy or pharmacotherapy." A common theme which emerges is that the biochemical effects of acupuncture for the treatment of depression is similar to the drug. Needling has the ability to increase the levels of monoamines. These include neurotransmitters serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine. Many antidepressant drugs increase monoamines and studies now show that acupuncture increases the levels of monoamine or monoamine affects local sensitivity receiver. The interesting aspect of the new research is that researchers now combine acupuncture with antidepressants and found in numerous studies, the combination produces superior patient outcomes.
